Background

Daniel Tseng, MD, is the former Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

A native Oregonian, Dr. Tseng received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. He continued to receive his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Returning to Oregon, Dr. Tseng completed his internship and residency at Oregon Health and Sciences University and continued on at OHSU to complete a fellowship in Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery where he presented and published numerous papers.

As a Clinical Assistant Professor at OHSU, he is actively involved in the General Surgery residency training program. He is a member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, and Clinical Robotic Surgery Association.

Currently, Dr. Tseng has privileges at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital, Legacy Good Samaritan and Meridian Park Hospital. He specializes in the application of minimally invasive surgery techniques to surgery (esophageal, gastric, colon, pancreatic, spleen, adrenal). He also performs minimal invasive hernia repairs, single incision surgery for benign surgical issues as well as screening endoscopy.

Dr. Tseng Performs Ground-Breaking Surgery

We are excited to announce that Dr. Dan Tseng completed the first robotic Single Incision Cholecystectomy in Oregon and SW Washington. The wheels in/out time for the patient was just 94 minutes and Dr. Tseng was on the console just 26 minutes. The patient's surgical incision measured exactly 2cm.

Although the instrumentation and set-up are significantly different from the traditional multi-port robotic surgery he is used to, Dr. Tseng felt set-up and console time were incredibly smooth, seamless and simple. Significant logistical and clinical benefits of the new precedure include 1 incision vs. 3 or 4, better visualization, and cost savings.

In a market (OR/SW Washington) that has 21 da Vinci Surgical Systems and well over 350 surgeons trained to use the equipment, this is a signficant milestone with a procedure that is done approximately 1 million times per year across the US.
